Sleep Training

I didn't think it was possible to sleep train Alex. Sunday night was the 1st night we tried it. He cried for a full hour. (The books say no longer than an hour.) I was about to go in and get him when he stopped crying. Last night we put him to bed again in his crib to cry himself to sleep. He did better; only 30 min of crying. Tonight he cried for no more than 15 minutes.
He's 5 1/2 months old now and he's learning to put himself to sleep. Before we would have to rock him in the chair, which I did love, or swing him in his car seat. However, once we put him down he would often wake up. It was so frustrating and draining.
In 2 weeks Dave and I are ditching, I mean lovingly saying goodbye to the kids while we go to Austin, TX for a Bridges Conference. Our parents are watching Lilia and Alex. (Please pray for them, seriously.) This was a huge motivation to get Alex to sleep on his own. Lilia can be a breeze, but Alex can be a bugger!
He now sleeps about 9-10 hours a night in his crib. It's such a huge relief!

Praise God!!!!!!!!!
Last night Alex slept from 8pm-6am in his crib! That's the longest stretch he's ever slept, let alone in his crib!
Continue to pray with me. Thank you!

Go Green

Saturday March 27th from 8:30-9:30pm turn off your lights for Earth Hour. You won't be the only one.

www.myearthhour.org
Please pray with me that Alex would love his crib. Pray that he would sleep comfortably there and would want to sleep in his crib.
He still sleeps in his car seat about 80% of the time. The last few days it's been all the time.
When I put him down he almost immediately wakes up and scratches his face/head. That doesn't happen in his car seat. Thank you for praying with me for Alex! It means a lot to me.

The zoo it is

The zoo was so fun this morning. The polar bears were the best today. One of them was swimming and having a blast with one of the toys. He would get it stuck on purpose and then dive under and get it out. He was doing flips too. It was great to watch!
Lilia's favorite is always the giraffe's. We made sure to see Marty, Melmen, Gloria and Alex the lion. (From Madagascar.)

Bride Lilia

Notice the shoes. Yes ladies, you can bike in heels and your wedding gown if you're determined!

Gardening with kids

Alex has become so stinkin spoiled! He always wants to be held. (He and Lilia were such opposites as babies!) So today I stuck him in this hiking carrier. He liked it pretty well. There were a couple times when I felt drool on my neck. (It didn't gross me out as much as it's grossing you out reading it.)
By the way this is out back. We planted 2 dwarf arborvitaes and a boxwood in the middle. We also put up this privacy fencing. It's looking great!

Ah shutters...the windows looked naked

The front yard demolition

My mom wanted to leave the 2 railings along the gardens, but that would have meant leaving up the archway closest to the sidewalk. We were not willing to do that. We wanted it to go!
Our neighbor who is our age watched us take it down. He said it's been up for 30 years! All the rust and how easily it came down proved that.

My mom and Lilia pulling weeds and clearing the soil

Lilia loved looking for "squirmy wormies." If you have lots of worms, then you have good soil.

The stuff was so rusted out we just pulled it out of the ground!

My dad using the saw zaw to take down the metal

The close to finished product!

We have to still add plenty of greenery to the yard, but it's a little early to plant stuff.

Yeah for today!

The weather is perfect and my parents are coming down for the day to work on our front yard. I'm so excited to beautify the outside! Stay tuned for lots of progress updates.

Whoops

Dave just found a small twig in the bottom of Alex's exersaucer. I guess he was a little too close to the action. Just for those of you worried that we're bad parents; he was in the kitchen with the door open.

(For this to make total sense, see the following 2 posts.)

Before

BACKYARD DEMO PART 1 (of many)
Today Dave, Lilia and I were cleaning up out back. Dave was using a saw zaw to cut down the dead tree branches in our yard, I'm sorry, area.
At one point Dave was bent down picking up stuff and Lilia said to him, "Dad, your butt is cracking."

Lilia's version

"Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garden grow?
With silver bells and taco shells and pretty maidens all in a row."
-Lilia Brindley, Age 3

I think it's official!

Lilia is potty trained! She came in our room this morning at 6am (far too early) and said, "Mom I have to pee."
She wears training pants to bed, but I couldn't believe that she listened to her body first thing in the morning. She's doing great. I think all week we've only had 2 or 3 accidents. That's awesome! Go Lilia!

A better sleeper

I think it's been all week, but Alex has only been waking up once at night. It's so glorious!!! He's been sleeping in his crib, at least for the 1st stretch of the night. Naps are still not great, but being a good night sleeper is far better. I'm so thankful!

Alex is 5 months today!

Hanging out on Penn's campus w/daddy

"You can't help me with these honey. This is very important work." -Lilia as she was opening and lining up our newly bought Easter eggs.

Milestones for both

Alex: He rolled over today in his crib!!! We were hanging out in his room and I looked over and he was on his belly, pushing up with his arms. Good job Alex!

Lilia: We were on an outing for about 2 hours and she wore big girl underwear and didn't have an accident! Wow. We tried 2 separate times to use a toilet, but she is so scared of them.
Any tips???

Enjoying the warmth

Today Lilia, Alex and I enjoyed a "picnic" out front. By "picnic" I mean we ate our lunch on the front stoop. We loved it!

Good days and tough days

I have to confess that since Alex was 3 weeks old I've had a really hard time in my relationship with God. It has nothing to do with no time to spend with him. Actually I've realized that I believe that God owes me an easy life. I believe that I deserve for him to make things better.
Let me explain it better. When Alex was 3 weeks old is when the trouble started and it's only progressed. Lilia was a model child and so we were spoiled. She was sleeping through the night by 3 months. I know I can't compare and I'm realizing that Lilia wasn't the norm. However, I can't help but constantly plead with God and yell at him that Alex has had it so rough.
I know in one way that God doesn't owe me anything. Even eternity in heaven is more than I deserve, but I can't help but still get so angry at God that Alex isn't more "normal."

What is needed

Though I have worked with American

students in America and East Asian students abroad,

I have been learning this year what an international

student needs is not the same. While at West

Chester and abroad, I would focus my time ensuring

that the men I worked with loved the gospel and

had experience doing ministry. I felt that if I gave

students those two goals, they would be prepared

for a lifetime of ministry. My experiences this year

have shown me that international students need a

third. I need to show them how important it is to be

plugged into a local church.

While at West Chester, I would require that

students leaders were part of a church, but here I

need to model to international students to serve

and love their local church. This point has been

drilled home to me by Stuart, a fellow worker with

international students in Philadelphia. He is starting

work on his seminary doctoral thesis tracking the

spiritual well being of East Asian Christians who

return home after college. After seeing so much

data and anecdotal evidence, he longs to understand

why so many new Christians do not find a church

home when they return back to East Asia.

If is for this reason, I have decided to do

most of my work this year in conjunction with two

local Chinese churches. At one church, I teach

English and a Bible study a couple times every

month.

The English class, which for many people is

what brings them in the door, has been interesting.

Many students have a hard time with all the idioms

we constantly use. (Listen to yourself talk for the

next hour and see how many phrases you use that

aren’t in a dictionary; like sports metaphors). The

Bible study time is the highlight of my schedule.

Most of the dozen or so members are non-

Christians and I really enjoy hearing what they love

and are offended by as they hear the gospel.

At the other Chinese church, I recently

returned from a weekend retreat that taught what

the Bible says about marriage. For the Christian and

non-Christian students, this was new material for

many of them. After the retreat, the pastor

requested that we meet. He asked what my goals on

campus were and I shared how I would love to see

the Christian men of the church trained and

motivated to find ways to share the gospel on

campus. He then grabbed the church directory and

gave me some men who he thought would benefit

the most from this. He then asked if I would like to

come to his church some Sunday to lead evangelism

training during the Sunday school time.

At home Alex still has bad eczema and is an

awful napper. When the itching is not bothering him

too bad, he is pleasant and smiles a lot. Lilia loves

being a big sister and making her brother laugh. We

are ready for winter to be over so we can take the

kids outside and enjoy the city.

Prayer Requests:

1)For Alex as he struggles with eczema, that he

would be healed. The poor guy is so itchy.

2)That many students would accept my challenge

to join me this summer in Boston for a two week

mission trip.

3)For the emails just sent out to new faculty at

Penn inviting them to the Christian faculty lunch.

Many of those receiving that email come from to

Penn from abroad.

A great day

Today was great, but man am I pooped! We are potty training again and Lilia only had 1 accident the whole day. We ditched her nap and went to the zoo. We got a membership for Christmas. It was insanely good exercise pushing a double stroller with 45lb worth of kids in it all around the zoo.
Alex was fairly normal with his sleeping, which makes for a nice day.

Lilia's 3rd Birthday

Dancing with daddy in her Belle dress, although Ariel is currently her favorite. (From the Little Mermaid incase your Disney knowledge is rusty.)

Princess Cake

Lilia was swaying along and smiling to us singing Happy Birthday. She was so excited to eat her cake...well really just the icing. She doesn't even eat the cake.

The arrival of Ava Manni

Ava was clutch in coming to Lilia's party. It didn't matter who else came. She was the last to arrive and Lilia was asking us to pick her up so she could look out the front door window to look for Ava. I finally texted Katy to see how far out they were. Lilia was waiting by the window and when she saw Ava coming she ran into the house screaming, "Ava's here, Ava's here!"
When Ava finally walked in the door Lilia gave her a big hug and a kiss. Her birthday party was complete.
Disclaimer: I apologize to any one who is offended that Lilia wasn't as excited that they came to her party. You must understand the princess bond that Lilia and Ava have. I think it's unbreakable.

Now that's talent

My mom bought this giraffe in Lancaster and it wasn't painted. My dad's sister Cheryl painted it. She's insanely talented!!!!!!
Ava Manni ran to the kitchen to hang out aprons on it.

Playing with presents

Alex with the Grandparents

Alex is sleeping in his crib and has been for over an hour! There is hope!!!

Alex the baby

So many of our friends in Asia have done this...it's a toy stroller for your dolls, but it's strong enough to hold a real baby. We stuck Alex in and took him for rides! He loved it!

Creative Painting

We got out a big roll of butcher paper and we were painting. Lilia starting to get creative with it and painted her fingernail. Then she painted mine and then moved onto her toes. It was a fun morning.

Alex the Punk

Alex is a horrible napper. I thought I would try a new approach to the everyday rocking him to sleep bit. I put him in his crib, turned on some nice music and said good night. He cried for 45 stinkin minutes...and NEVER fell asleep. I couldn't do a whole hour. Unbelievable! This kid is stubborn I think.
So I picked him up, rocked him to sleep and put him in his crib. He was asleep for 10 minutes he before he cried. Yeah that's right, he hates his crib. Alex is destined to sleep in his car seat FOREVER! So I rocked him again, but I wasn't patient enough to rock for a while. When I set him down in his car seat he woke up. I was so furious!
So his 1st nap since 7:30am was at 12:45! What a punk!
